Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing

Christian social media is a weird place, where there’s a lot of people that seem to believe that dunking on other believers is their spiritual gift.

Straight up heresy deviating from the Nicene Creed needs to be called out. That said, social media has produced the same phenomenon we see in virtually every other subculture where there’s an abundance of basement dwelling theoretical experts who know all the right answers, but they don’t seem to actually demonstrate their expertise in the real world in a way that walks the walk, much less actually improves the world or the lives of others.

Every day I see Catholic vs. Orthodox vs. Protestant, Calvinist vs. Arminian vs. Provisionist, pre-mil vs. post-mil vs amil, transubstantiationalist vs consubstantiationalist vs memorialist, and even drums and guitar vs metered Psalms a cappella.

That’s all great stuff to ponder and discuss, but if it becomes the main thing and we have not love, and do not bear the fruits of the Spirit, and fighting about it gets in the way of doing our Father’s work, then our pet theology might be an idol. I love theology, philosophy, soteriology, and don’t mind eschatology, but they’ve got to be kept in their proper place.

I don’t believe that at the end of our lives the Lord Jesus will ask us, “Tell me about your opinions on the writings of Boethius regarding the nature of time as it relates to my perception.”

Instead, I imagine he’ll ask, “Did you trust in me for your salvation? Did you love God as I commanded? Did you love others and care for them as I commanded? Did you go and make disciples?”

We need to live accordingly. He’s got work for us to do. Don’t just talk about it. Be about it. Let’s get to it.
